Overview
|
Desolate and forbidding landscapes, seemingly devoid of life is what awaits you. Starting at the red dunes of the Augrabies, where the Gariep cascades down the 80m Falls into the gorge below. The stark landscape dotted with Quiver trees and red/rust sunrises and sunsets invite you to explore this region. The Richtersveld Transfrontier Park founded in 2003 is fast becoming the 4X4 enthusiast’s destination of choice. As sedan cars are not allowed in the Park, 4X4’s roam freely across the rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes. The National Park offers diverse game and bird watching from the very rare leopard, to the more common family of shrews. The driving whilst not technical is challenging as the passes wind up and down the mountains. An exciting pontoon crossing of the Gariep River provides access to Namibia, where you will overnight at the campsite situated at the Fish River Canyon. As one of Namibia’s national treasures this is a “must do”. |

Returning back into South Africa we further explore the Richtersveld National Park, before moving onto the “Roaring Dunes” of Witsand. The Witsand Nature Reserve is teeming with birdlife including Africa’s smallest raptor, the Pygmy Falcon. The white dunes ranging from twenty to sixty meters high cover a vast quantity of sub-surface water, making this area one of the few reliable sources of water in the region. Our last night will be spent comparing the red sands of the Kalahari, mountain passes of the Richtersveld, the enormity of the Fish River Canyon and the gentle white dunes of Witsand, with their wind chiselled patterns. |
